Friday Fotos....

I've posted this photo before.
I think it's worth repeating.

Wishing everyone a safe weekend.
Please take a moment to say a prayer for all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice,
as well as for those who are still bearing the wounds of war, seen and unseen,
 and for their families.

Tip for a Tuesday....

Looking for a thickening mascara that won't drain your wallet?
Try Almay's one coat Thickening mascara.
Suitable for sensitive eyes, like mine.

(I have found it works even better than higher priced Clinique's.)

A Monday Memory....

Today would have been my Dad's 104th birthday!
I've been playing Nat King Cole music all morning in remembrance of him.
One of his absolute favorite pastimes was to sit on the couch,
listening to Nat King Cole or Peggy Lee music on his beloved stereo,
similar to the one pictured below.

Back in the '70's, whenever my parents would leave the house, my sister and I would immediately raise the lid on the stereo, twist the dial to one of our radio stations
and turn the volume up full blast.
And yes, we often forgot to reset the controls when we were finished,
with the result that my Dad would be jarred when he hit the "on" button.

The poor man would frequently ask us,
"How is the music any better when you turn it up so loud?"
Oh, Dad.  You just don't understand, we would think.

These days, being of a similar age now, I get it.
Though I confess I still turn the volume up with certain songs when out driving in my Mini Cooper.

Happy Birthday, Daddy.
Miss you....

Wednesday's Wisdom....

Tip for a Tuesday.....

Start the day.... with a smile!

What a lovely sight, every time I open the cabinet in my bathroom and am greeted with these adorable munchkins.

Post photos of loved ones, flowering plants or exotic locations in unexpected places such as kitchen or bathroom cabinets or doors.  Will brighten your day every time you open them!

A Monday Memory....

Remember these?
I spent hours in the early years of our marriage filling up these books with stamps I accumulated at the grocery store. My efforts certainly paid off!  I was able to get dozens of free household items. My final reward was a 19inch television!!  Not a bad return for licking and pasting stamps.

A little research this morning informed me that these trading stamps first came into use in the 1930's and were around until the late 1980's in some areas.

"They were distributed as part of a rewards program operated by the Sperry & Hutchinson company (S&H), founded in 1896 by Thomas Sperry and Shelley Byron Hutchinson. During the 1960s, the company promoted its rewards catalog as being the largest publication in the United States and boasted that it issued three times as many stamps as the U.S. Postal Service. Customers would receive stamps at the checkout counter of supermarkets, department stores, and gasoline stations among other retailers, which could be redeemed for products in the catalog." Wikipedia

Sadly, the coupons that print out of the cash register at the supermarket these days
just don't offer the same rewards or excitement.

Thursday's Thought for the Day....

"There is a greater gift than the trust of others and that is to trust in oneself. Some might call it confidence, others name it faith. But if it makes us brave, the label doesn't matter, for it's the thing that frees us to embrace life itself."
"Call the Midwife"

Tip for a Tuesday....

I highly recommend the following....

Hidden Figures - "An incredible and inspiring untold true story about three women at NASA who were instrumental in one of history’s greatest operations – the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit."  This film should be a must in every high school! The acting, scenery, and the story - phenomenal!!!

Line of Duty - a British television series about police procedure and possible police corruption. If you like plot twists, nail biting tension, and surprise endings, this is a series for you!  Available on Hulu and on other online sites.

Quivervision - "Now with Quiver children can bring their unique coloring creations to life in extraordinary 3D augmented reality. Characters literally leap off the page, entertaining both little and big minds." Our flagship app ‘Quiver’ is available on iOS, Android and Amazon.  The Englishman discovered this app, which the grandkids loved!  It really does bring to life the characters on pages colored by the kids (or me!).  They also create 3d film clips.  Some of the pages are free, others range from 99 cents to a few dollars.  Worth checking out for your kids or grandkids.

A Monday Memory....

First Communion at Our Lady of Mercy Church....
May 6, 1961

April 30, 2017
Grandmom, then granddaughter.
Same parish, different churches - 56 years apart.

My service was in what was later referred to as, "the old church", that year.  As you can see from the cornerstone on the right, the current church was opened in 1962.

This old black and white photo from that day hardly does justice to the beauty that was found in that old church.  The paintings, the statues, the stained glass windows, and the elaborate carvings on the end of each pew were simply spectacular.  Sadly, as the number of parishioners from the four towns OLM encompassed grew it became apparent the tiny church would not be adequate for the growing numbers and a new church was built about half a mile away, across from the parish school.
When I was in eighth grade, we used to have cheerleading practice in what was then the empty shell of the building.  It seemed wrong somehow to be doing cartwheels down the formerly carpeted aisle I walked during Mass.

This is the church in 2017, updated many times since I was a child.

Granddaughter #1's First Communion day was truly special. What a blessing to be there with the Englishman, our three daughters, three granddaughters and two son-in-laws.

M's mom said to her that she wanted it to be a day,
that when she looked back years from now, she would smile.
I have absolutely no doubt that she will!
