Thursday's Thought for the Day....

Tip for a Tuesday....

Squeaky doors?
Here's an easy fix:
The squeaky sound emanating from the hinges of our pantry closet was not only annoying,
it was a "call to run," or in the case of my basset boys - saunter,
into the kitchen in hopes of scoring a chew stick.

Solution?
Apply fragrance oil to a cotton ball, swab the hinges front and back.
Voila!  No more squeak!

Easy Peasy.

A Monday Memory....

Wildlife in the suburbs...

Recent stories of coyotes, deer and bears being spotted in suburban areas brought a memory to mind.

The first house the Englishman and I purchased was at the end of a long, narrow lane, bordered by a thick woods along one side.  Our property also abutted an acre of woods at the rear.  I was to discover that in addition to the wonderful privacy and views this afforded us, it also brought with it an assortment of interesting critters.

The previous owners had installed a series of three metal garbage containers, set deep into the ground at the edge of the driveway.  Each were accessed by way of a handle attached to the lid.  I never gave it much thought as to why the cans were "buried" and simply used them as they were.

Until one particular morning.

While bustling through my daily routine, I headed out to the driveway to place yet another bag of garbage in the cans.  As I raised the lid, I was very surprised to find a pair of eyes staring up at me! My brain quickly registered that they belonged to a rather large raccoon.

Now, after years of watching Disney cartoons and other favorable versions of tiny animals, I have a tendency to think, "oh, how cute!" when first coming face to face with say, a mouse or squirrel. However, at this moment, my brain screamed "danger," causing me to quickly drop the can's lid back down and rush into the house.

I tried not to panic, remembering the Englishman was miles away in NYC and unable to come to the rescue.  As luck would have it, there happened to be a couple of workmen in the house that day.  I quickly related what I had discovered.  Without hesitation, one of the men rushed outside. Picking up a large stick, he used it to open the can's lid and coax the trapped raccoon out - as much to the raccoons relief as ours!

Thereafter, I made sure to place a large rock on top of each and every garbage can right up until the day we moved out. Thankfully, I have not been confronted by a furry masked bandit since.

Tip for a Tuesday....

Got stainless steel appliances?
Meyer's Clean Day is the way to keep them clean!!

I am a huge fan of Meyer's cleaner, dish detergent and hand soap!

Stainless steel was the choice of appliance for the previous owners of our house.
Personally, I prefer white.

Stainless shows fingerprints and needs constant cleaning.
I had been using the can of spray cleaner left under the sink when we purchased the house.
But I dislike aerosol cans and some of the fine mist also ended up on the floor,
making it dangerously slippery.

In frustration, I tried using my spray bottle of Meyer's Clean Day.
It works fabulously!!!
The stainless is gleaming and there is no residual on the floor.
Even better? It's cheaper to use than the fancy stainless steel cleaner.

Easy Peasy, lemon squeezy, as the British say.
Or, in this case, lavender squeezy.

Wednesday's Wisdom....

An accomplishment which often finds its way on to my daily gratitude list.
I highly recommend it.

Tip for a Tuesday....

What to pack in your travel bag:

The best piece of advice my sister-in-law ever gave me came just before a visit with her family.
Traveling to their home by plane with a toddler in tow had me a bit apprehensive about negotiating the trip on my own.  During a pre-flight phone call, my sister-in-law passed on her own experience in that area and suggested I pack a complete change of clothes, and a plastic bag, for my little one in my carry on luggage.  That way, if there were a problem in the airport or my suitcase was lost, I would at least have the ability to deal with it immediately.

How right she was!!  My little one's sudden upset tummy, just before boarding, necessitated a quick trip to the ladies room and complete change of clothes.  Having all the necessary items in my carry on bag made all the difference and enabled us to easily make the flight.

My tip? Pack a "carry on bag" of necessary supplies and keep it close at hand while traveling.
No matter your mode of transportation - plane, train or car - items such as a change of clothes, plastic bags, tissues, etc. can make your traveling experience one of ease rather than panic.

Friday Fotos....

A Piece of History

It's arrived!
A ceramic poppy - one of 888,246 hand made poppies for the art installation,
"Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red" at the Tower of London.
They were on display between 5th August and 11th November 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War in 1914.

This is the box it arrived in.

This is the certificate of authenticity and a booklet describing how the poppies were made, the military charities their sale is supporting and photos of the finished display.

And this is our poppy, which we are proudly displaying in a potted "peace lily."

Wishing all those who celebrate this weekend
a blessed Easter and a happy Passover!

Wednesday's Wisdom....

This is wonderful advice - but rarely my first response to life.
I need to be reminded.  Frequently.
