My Dad passed on numerous driving tips to me over the years. One of the most valuable was concerning ice and snow on the roads.
He said that as soon as I exited our driveway and got onto our street I should test the road conditions.
Accelerate slowly then hit the brakes, he would advise.
That way you can get a feel for the road conditions and know what may lie ahead on your trip.
If I could deal with the situation on our quiet side road, the main roads should be fine.
